How did the gold rush in California, in 1849, affect the development of America?

The United States was going through a process of expansion.

The next year there were 80,000 forty-niners that flocked to California.
- (cross roads) Place where roads or paths cross;
San Francisco was at the crossroads of the California Gold Rush.
