John Cabot

Cabot Arrives Cabot Stamp

John Cabot was an explorer. He was Italian. His real name was Giovanni Caboto. But, Britain wanted him to sail for them. The king of England supported his trip. A shorter route to Asia was what they were trying to find.

Britain did not know much about this continent. They did not know what they were going to find. What they found was Newfoundland (New found land). Cabot claimed this new place for Britain. He thought he had found Asia. Cabot's Route After returning he planned another trip. What Cabot learned became news he took back. More people became interested in exploring America.

Cabot went on a second trip but never returned. We do not know what happened to him or his crew. This is an example of how dangerous travel was to the new world or America. The trip was long and explorers had little knowledge about what they would face or find. When they did find land they were not sure where they were. The way they traveled was in sailing ships of those times. It took weeks, months or more to make a trip. A ship’s crew had to take all the supplies they needed. Supplies they took were stored in barrels. Even their water was stored in wood barrels.
